Woodlands Drive-In: Chennai’s Iconic Eatery Returns with a Modern Twist

Chennai’s beloved Woodlands Drive-In makes a surprise return, blending nostalgic charm with modern comforts.

    Key Highlights:

    1. Iconic Return: Woodlands Drive-In reopens after 18 years in Arumbakkam.
    2. Nostalgia Revived: Classic dishes meet modern amenities.
    3. Social Hub: Continues to be a favorite gathering spot.

For those who grew up in Madras, the memory of Woodlands Drive-In is unforgettable. Known for its peaceful setting and delicious dosas served directly to cars, it was a beloved retreat in the bustling city. The restaurant originally opened in 1962 on a nearly 12-acre plot of lush greenery in the heart of Cathedral Road. It quickly became famous as South India’s first drive-in restaurant, where many first experienced dishes like chola bhatura and bread peas masala.

In 2008, after six decades of operation, the lease ended, and the land was repurposed into Semmozhi Poonga, a botanical garden and horticulture research center. Now, after nearly 18 years, the iconic Woodlands Drive-In is being relaunched on a smaller one-acre plot in Arumbakkam.

Although the new site is more modest, with space for about 20 cars and a dining area that accommodates 140 guests, it still offers a mix of classic and new features. Gone are the steel trays once clamped to car doors, but the drive-in spirit lives on. The menu includes old favorites like masala dosa and poori-Bombay saagu, along with new additions like North Indian and Chinese dishes. The space also pays homage to its past with old photographs and retro-inspired décor.

The relaunch has already attracted attention, with many celebrities and former patrons eager to revisit the iconic spot. The new drive-in continues to be a social hub, much like the original, where people gather for coffee, meals, and even business meetings. Senior citizens, in particular, have embraced the space, enjoying evening coffee and snacks in a relaxed setting. With plans for weekend pony rides and more, Woodlands Drive-In is set to create new memories while honoring its rich history.
